If you have been on TikTok or Instagram this week, you have probably seen it. Women are sharing videos of their silk presses, sew ins, and blowouts done at Ulta. Many are saying they left their stylist behind. The reasons sound familiar: no deposit, same day appointments, lower prices, and reward points on top.
I want to start by saying something clearly. There are talented stylists working inside Ulta salons, many of them Black women who know textured hair well. This is not about tearing anyone down. When women feel priced out or boxed in by booking rules, they go looking for something easier. I understand that, and I take it seriously.
But this trend made me sit with a question I think every woman deserves to ask before her next appointment.
Are you paying for a style, or for a plan?
A quick blowout can look beautiful when you walk out the door. The question is how your hair looks six months from now. Thinning edges, breakage at the crown, a dry or itchy scalp, length that never seems to hold. None of those are fixed by a single appointment, no matter where you book it.
When I started doing hair, I learned on my family at a dining room chair. What that season taught me is that hair tells a story over time. The press is only one page of it.
What a hair health studio does differently
At Her Mane Therapy, every new client journey starts with understanding the whole picture, not just the look you want this week.
- We start at the scalp. Healthy hair grows from a healthy scalp, so we look there first.
- We build a routine with you. You leave with a Hair Health Roadmap, so you are not guessing between visits.
- We track your progress. Your hair history matters. We know what worked last time and what your hair needs next.
- We protect your length. Heat, tension, and installs are planned around the health of your hair, not just the finish.
That is why so many of our clients begin with The Hair Care Reset. It is a rehab appointment for your hair, with a regimen to follow afterward, and it finishes in a silk press or a twist set depending on what your hair needs that day.
Convenience and care do not have to compete
I hear the frustration behind this trend. Women are busy. Moms, entrepreneurs, and working women do not have time to chase appointments. That is exactly why we plan with you. When your hair has a routine, you spend less time fixing problems and more time enjoying your hair.
So wherever you book next, ask yourself one thing. Is someone looking at the health of my hair, or only the style?
If you are ready for a plan instead of another guess, I would love to meet you.
Protect. Grow. Repeat
