A silk press is the perfect way to enjoy sleek, smooth, and shiny hair—without permanently altering your natural texture. Whether you’re new to silk presses or a seasoned client, understanding how your hair behaves after your appointment is key to keeping your results healthy and long-lasting.

Here’s everything you need to know about your silk press journey, from Day 1 through Weeks 3–4, plus expert maintenance tips to protect your hair.

What Is a Silk Press?

A silk press is a heat-based straightening service that gives natural hair a sleek, smooth, and shiny finish—without chemicals. When properly cared for, a silk press can last 2–4 weeks while keeping your hair healthy and reversible back to its natural texture.

What to Expect After Your Silk Press

Day 1:
Hair is sleek, smooth, and full of shine. Avoid touching or tucking hair behind your ears to prevent bends and oil transfer.

Days 2–3:
Your silk press is settling. Avoid sweat, steam, workouts without protection, and humidity. Always wrap your hair at night.

Week 1:
Natural oils may surface. Hair may feel softer or slightly fuller but should remain straight. Wrap nightly with a satin scarf or beehive method.

Week 2:
The “fresh press” look may soften—this is normal. Avoid extra heat. This is the best time to book a hydrating maintenance wash and refresh.

Weeks 3–4:
Depending on hair type and lifestyle, some reversion may occur.

What’s Normal vs. Not Normal

Normal:
• Slight volume increase
• Softening of the press
• Natural oils at the hairline
• Reversion with humidity

Not Normal:
• Excessive dryness
• Breakage from reapplying heat
• Strong reversion within 24 hours
• Hard or sticky buildup

How to Maintain Your Silk Press

  • Wrap hair nightly with satin or silk
  • Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase
  • Avoid heavy oils, butters, and edge controls
  • Keep hair away from water, steam, and humidity
  • Use recommended heat protectant for light touch-ups only
  • Protect hair during workouts (wrap + sweatband)
  • Book hydration and maintenance every 2–3 weeks
